Deer on Table Mountain

900X700cm. Oil on canvas board. R3000.

Second animal painting. Sold

Painting an animal, although from reference again, from a coffee table book, was very rewarding. The most striking factor in the execution of this rendition was the simplicity of the operation, and in fact the intrepidation was unnecessary.

South African Leopard

Seeking subjects to paint and this followed on from the light house paintings.

Once rife in the Tzitzikamma forests, now virtually extinct in the area, this proud  Leopard sits waiting on African Thorn Bush Tree, alert and intent with every muscle poised, while the photographer clicks his camera. The reference is from a coffee table publication by a South African Publishing House.

Cotton Reel  Kitty

A crop of a painting The Fader, which became a conglomeration of nasturtiums, Lotus, which incidentally grew together at a park near the then Middle school, now converted to the primary school. The candle light and doll that came into the painting were amusing additions. However, the focus was on the vase and the imaginery visitor, the kitten.

Having enjoyed painting the Leopard, much to my surprise, I wanted to get the moving qualities of the feline wildlife, which is another dedication on its own in order to graduate to the lion. But having studied the behaviour of the lion, ad nauseum. it is hard to eulogise the dear royal gentlemen and ladies, but of course they have a beauty of their own, which is well enough to paint and is done ad infinitum. The concentration on technique, though, always must coincide with subject and content that placates the artist's patrioticsm. I thought I would start with a cat. This profile is unreferenced, but having grown up always with a house cat or two, it is easy to summon the movements of a pet cat from memory.

If one were to determine by painting, of the effects of true love, one would look at this kitty, vase and saucer of milk and read a chapter of the painter's roller coaster of response to situations.
