Palette
Student Colours are less permanent and Artist colours have an intriguing variation in consistency possiblities as well as a stronger dye. Once one has chosen starting colours from either category, one develops a personal understanding of favourites. Many professionals still use a good Red, Blue and Yellow as their base from which to work.
Application
Putting paintbrush to paper is the only way to get in touch with the medium to be used. No amount of theory is as valuable as practice.
| Once the journey is begun, then the paint itself reveals the rules.
One can work from a dark background traditionally, or from the principle of minimilism. However, in oil painting, it works best to have the entire surface covered, which is the opposite to water painting wherein applications are non-negotiable and is a greater challenge to artistry and honesty.
